  • Makerspace 

    Engage with the cutting-edge tools in our makerspace, featuring 3D printers, Cricuts, and sewing machines. Through dynamic design challenges, students will not only enhance their STEM-based knowledge and application but also discover and nurture their potential passion for future career pathways in Career and Technical Education (CTE). Fostering creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, this class is designed to inspire sustained commitment and achievement. 

     

    Food Science 

    Cooking is loaded with hidden science, just lurking in the delicious shadows. Hypothesize and uncover the biology, chemistry, and physics that make our food so fantastic! Explore the science behind the food we eat, experiment with techniques to refine recipes and eat the data!  

     

    Plant Science 

    Students will be planting plants in the greenhouse while exploring what makes plants grow and how plants impact our environment. We will discuss through hands on activities how soil, sunlight, and water impact plant growth. Students will learn how food comes from the soil to their plates. 

     

    Lego Robotics 

    Do you love to design & build? Do you have an interest in coding & finding solutions? Then Lego Robotics is the class for you! Students will construct and code multiple robots and use their sensors to innovate new inventions. This class is hands-on, minds-on, learning through play and experimentation – and a little bit of competitive fun!  

     

    **Swiftie STEM: The STEM Behind Taylor’s Magic!**   

    Are you a Swiftie who loves science, technology, engineering, and math? Join us for **Swiftie STEM**, where we’ll explore the fascinating ways STEM connects to Taylor Swift’s music, tours, and career! This class is packed with hands-on activities that bring STEM to life—Taylor’s Version. Get ready to shake it off and think STEM! 🎤✨ 

     

    Coding with Spheros 

     

     

    CSI 

    Crime Scene Investigation-CSI: Students will develop their detective skills using math, science, technology, and engineering to solve criminal cases! Students will learn about crime scene basics, eyewitness accounts, blood splatter analysis, and even conduct their own DNA extractions!  Studying footprints, finger printing, handwriting, lipstick analysis, and entomology, students will enhance their critical thinking skills and apply them to real world situations!  

     

    Fore the Future: Exploring STEM through Golf 

    FORE!  Join this golf-based class for hands-on learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Students explore real-world applications of these subjects by studying ecosystems, using technology in golf course management, and designing their own golf course features. This fun, interactive class allows students to strengthen critical skills while fostering an appreciation for nature and environmental sustainability. 

     

    Artful Innovators: Exploring STEM through Creativity 

     

  • Spheros and Drones

    Calling all Drone Pilot and Sphero Robot Enthusiasts.  From novice to expert, this hands-on experience will be a blast as you learn applications as you maneuver each of these devices.  Pilots will practice take-offs, landings, and hoovering as they gain expertise through challenging competitions. Spheros will test their coding skills and intrigue spectators as they deliver sassy moves with speed and precision. 

     

    Food Etiquette 

    Join us for a fun and interactive course where students explore the art of entertaining through the lens of STEM and etiquette! This hands-on program teaches essential life skills, including table setting, food presentation, event planning, and digital hosting, while incorporating basic science, technology, engineering, and math concepts. Students will design table layouts, experiment with food chemistry, engineer creative centerpieces, and create digital invitations—all while learning proper etiquette for social and formal gatherings. 

     

    Tiny Home, Big Impact: Sustainable Design & Upcycled Architecture 

    Students will explore sustainable architecture, interior design, and engineering by designing and building a 3D tiny home model using upcycled materials. They will apply math, physics, and material science to create eco-friendly, space-efficient designs while learning about renewable resources and energy-efficient solutions. Aligned with the Architecture & Construction Career Pathway (CTE), this course introduces students to careers in architecture, interior design, and sustainable engineering while reinforcing real-world problem-solving in green living. 

     

    Vet Med 

    Hear from veterinarians, participate in a dissection, and discuss how and why Vet Med is critical in caring for animals.     

     

    Innovation Lab

    Thinking Through Games 

    In this class students will analyze the intellectual skills used when playing games. The class aims to expose students to games they have never played and cause them to think differently the next time they play their usual games.

    Dive into Media Design 

    Get a preview of the MHS Media Design and Communications pathway with journalism and media technology projects like digital photography, audio and video editing, podcasting and print design for presentations. This session may involve using the spaces and equipment that MHS Student Media use when making content for the website, newspaper, yearbook, livestreams and the new video board at Bishop Stadium.  

     

    NBAF 

    The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is a national asset that helps protect the nation’s agriculture, farmers and citizens through the combined work of veterinarians, microbiologists, engineers, environmental scientists and security teams. Come learn more about all of the different work that is done within NBAF and participate in fun activities as well. 

     

    Building the Future: Minecraft STEM Adventures 

    In this Minecraft STEM session, students in grades will explore the fundamentals of science, technology, engineering, and math through creative building challenges within the Minecraft world. They will work on projects that incorporate problem-solving, teamwork, and hands-on design, such as creating structures, coding contraptions, and simulating real-world physics. This engaging course encourages critical thinking and fosters collaboration while allowing students to apply STEM concepts in a fun, virtual environment. 

2025 Summer Drivers Education

Registration Information

  • Online application opens on Monday, March 24 at 7:30 a.m.
  • The only way to sign up for Summer Drivers Education is through the online application
  • The application will close after 48 students are registered for each of the two sessions. Space is limited so sumbit your application early. Students will only attend one session.
  • Filling out the application does NOT guarantee a spot for Drivers Education – students may be placed on a waitlist in the order of which you applied.
  • You will be contacted by the instructor, Shane Eslit, to confirm your student’s enrollment.

Important Dates

  • Online application opens – Monday, March 24 at 7:30 a.m.
  • Mandatory Parent Meeting – April 12 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. OR April 26 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at MHS (2100 Poyntz) in the Commons area
    • A parent or guardian MUST attend this meeting on either of the dates with their student
    • Bring/wear prescription eyewear for a student vision screening
    • The following will be discussed at the parent meeting
      • Completion of official application for the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) participation. We will review the KDOR Medical Review documentation for those who have a need.
      • Review of classroom guidelines.
      • Review of driving guidelines: Behind The Wheel (BTW) instruction begins after your student passes the Kansas Handbook Test; 12 lessons totaling 6 hours of BTW, minimum.
      • Discuss licensing requirements and driving privileges. Explanation of Graduated Drivers License (GDL) Process.
      • Vision screenings for students (Included in your fees).
  • Session 1 – May 27 – June 19
    • You have two options for classtimes: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. OR 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Session 1 – June 23 – July 17
    • You have two options for classtimes: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. OR 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Fees

  • $450.00 for students who do not live in USD 383 boundaries during 2024-2025 school year
  • $300.00 for students who qualify for regular fees during 2024-2025 school year
  • $150.00 for students who qualify for reduced fees during 2024-2025 school year
  • $100.00 for students who qualify for free fees during 2024-2025 school year
  • Payment must be made in full prior to class starting to avoid being dropped from the class
  • Payment can be cash, check, or card – make checks payable to USD 383. Payment can be submitted to Cheryl James at 2100 Poyntz (MHS) or to Christina Shoemaker at 901 Poyntz (Lincoln Education Center)

Important Information

  • Eligibility
    • Students must be 14 years of age by May 16th. If your He/She was born after this date, your student must wait until the Fall session of Drivers Education. This provides ample time for their DE-99 Application to be approved by KDOR.
  • Classroom expectations
    • Attendance to all classroom sessions is mandatory. We cannot allow exceptions. Any camps, athletic events, vacations, appointments, etc. will need to be arranged around the Driver Education classroom schedule.
