I am sure you have most likely heard Governor Kelly’s Executive “Stay Home” order this morning. Some of you may have questions regarding how this will impact our plans moving forward. Governor Kelly’s order doesn’t change how we will conduct business according to our Continuous Learning Plan and plans to return student belongings this next week.
In information received from our Director of Communication, yesterday, the Riley County Health Department has approved our plans for return of student items this next week. The Governor’s “Stay Home” order does NOT change these plans or the Continuous Learning Plan which starts Wednesday, April 1. I would like to share a few answers to some Frequently Asked Questions. (FAQ) from AMS families.
MY CHILD NOW NEEDS A DEVICE AS I AM WORKING AT HOME WITH THE NEW STAY HOME ORDER, CAN SHE/HE GET ONE?
This order has also brought new needs for many families. As AMS teachers
reach out to you, please continue to let us know if there are resources that we can assist with or provide information. Many families have since had a change in technology needs. These names will be provided to our technology department for a second distribution and you will be notified at a later date. The results from the first survey is how we determined the needs of devices to hand out for this Monday and Tuesday (March 30th and 31st).
HOW WILL THIS CONTINUOUS LEARNING WORK?
Many students and families are wondering how this Continuous Learning will work. The district has been working to pull all the work our teachers have been doing into one location on our website. This portion will go active April 1. Our middle school students will be able to go in and select their grade level and click on the class they would like to work on from their 4th quarter schedule. For example, a student can select Social Studies and there will be assignments, videos and other information for them to work on. This electronic format will be available for middle and high school students first and elementary schools will be doing packet work the first 14 days.
MY CHILD HAS TURNED INTO A NIGHT OWL, CAN THEY GET ON ANY TIME AND WORK?
Yes, they just won’t be able to have access during the middle of the night to their teachers 😊 In most cases there is the ability for students to select from a list of activities to achieve the desired outcome. Our teachers have worked
to narrow the focus to the essential expectations for each course. Teachers from all departments will have office hours where students can ask questions.
Students are also able to email their teachers to clarify and ask questions during the school day. We want this. We encourage this two -way communication and engagement. The night owls may have to email and wait for the response for next day.
SHOULD I MAKE A STUDY SPACE FOR MY CHILD?
Setting a learning place in your home with minimal distractions is ideal.
A schedule for them to work, to take break, move and to relax is something
we are all trying to put in place in our homes during the STAY HOME order. It will be challenging for us all.
This is our first time ever doing this and I am sure there will be things that we will all learn, through this continuous learning format, COVID-19 pandemic, about ourselves and one another. We will do this together! The key is …we are in this together. We are not alone! I hope answering a few of these frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) was helpful. I wish you each a safe and healthy week.

Greetings AMS Families,
The counseling office at AMS wanted to reach out to you during this unprecedented time where we are all facing a great deal of change or uncertainty. Even though our school building is physically closed we wanted to share that we are still here to support our students and families from a virtual setting. Our contact information is listed below:
Jessica Boone, AMS School Social Worker
Shelly Ingram, AMS Counselor
Erica Lienemann, EMS/AMS Counselor
Keely Say, AMS School Nurse
We understand this is a difficult time for our students for many reasons. Students should still feel that can reach out to their school counselors, school social workers, and school nurses as needed. We are being challenged to think in a different way and come up with alternatives to what has always been a face to face job. We are committed to your students and look to be as available and proactive as possible during this time of crisis. Thank you for your understanding as we move forward.
For all matters that are not an emergency, please know that we will do our best to respond in a timely manner.
If your student is feeling suicidal or unsafe, please take one or more of the following actions immediately!
2-Text HOME to 741741 to access a trained crisis counselor
3-Call the suicide prevention hotline 1-800-273-TALK
4-Call the Pawnee Mental Health Crisis Stabilization center at (800) 609-2002 or (785) 587-4300 (select option #2) or go there. It is located at 1558 Hayes Drive Suite A, in Manhattan.

We care for you!

To all AMS Families,
We have had quite a few changes in the last week and our staff has been working hard. We have pick up of personal items, textbooks, medication and electronic devices that will be part of the scheduled pick up on March 30 and 31. The electronic devices will be available for students, and if your family is receiving a device there will be a need to sign a technology use agreement. Steps have been taken to do this in a manner consistent with Riley County Health Department procedures. For those families that indicated they needed Internet Connectivity, this will be a part of a second distribution at a later date.
Curriculum materials for families without electronic connectivity will receive paper packets at time of pick up. For those that are able to access the district website there will be resources from every content area on your child’s 4th quarter schedule. Middle school students will be offered choices to select from, including materials, videos and activities. This will go live on April 1. (No fooling!)
**As a reminder, March 30th and 31st are the pickup dates for both 7/8 grades. 7th grade students/parents will utilize the north parking lot pickup/drop-off lanes near the C-Hall door and 8th grade students/parents will utilize the front drive thru area.

b. Tuesday 3/31 – Last names L through Z, 9:00 to 11:00am and 1:00 to 3:00pm
