Welcome to the Bergman Library Media Center!
The Bergman Library Media Center is the hearth and heart of the Bergman school. It is the place where students, staff, parents and patrons gather for instruction, meetings, computer use, studying, reading, and of course, finding a good book! I invite you to come in to meet me, Mrs. Doyen, the Library Media Specialist, and my staff of Ms. Zeak, the Library Clerk, at the circulation desk and keeping the shelves in order and Miss Hupp, the Computer Lab Aide, maintaining lab computers and assisting teachers in the computer lab.
I have worked diligently to transform the Bergman Library Media Center into a 21st Century Library Media Center concentrating on the state adopted 21st century skills of not only Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Science and Social Studies, but Rigor, Relevance, Relationships, Responsive Culture, Results, collaboration and communication as well. The Library Media Center is the largest classroom in the building serving all 500 of our students, their teachers and families. Lessons have been designed to integrate all content areas and have technology embedded in the learning. Students experience quality fiction, non-fiction, and reference materials, music and art in print and electronic formats.
I always keep in mind the following three “R’s” in my work in the Bergman Library Media Center:
- Reading –Experiencing quality literature ignites imagination, creativity and curiosity. Therefore, I make it a priority to read and share quality literature with students through drama, reading aloud, showing stories through media and introducing students to literature through book talks and book fairs. Students with good reading skills are successful in school and beyond. So I began a project to help students become successful readers. All 24,000 library items are being marked with the Lexiles when available, so it is easier to locate reading materials that meet their needs. Students have power over their own learning when they know their Lexile level (through district assessments), locate books that fit in their range and then they are able to take RC tests to demonstrate reading comprehension.
- Research Skills – Information is power! Knowing how to access, evaluate and use information to share what students know and learn is a vital skills for today’s citizens. Learning is enhanced by opportunities to share and learn with others. Students need to develop skills in sharing knowledge and learning with others in both face-to-face situations and through technology
- Responsible Technology Use - In this 21st century world it is vital that students become knowledgeable, responsible and ethical users of technology developmentally appropriate for their age and understand they are creating a digital footprint. Students learn to use various technology tools and resources. The library provides equitable physical and intellectual access to the resources and tools required for learning in a warm, stimulating, and safe environment.
Students, teachers and parents have flexible and continuous access to the library and its resources, throughout the school day. The Library Media Center is an active, technology-rich, student centered learning environment that promotes reading, information literacy, critical thinking and lifelong learning.
The Bergman Library Media Centers still offers the wonderful services of the past, but also have embraced many new and interesting ideas of the 21st Century. So, the next time you have a moment, stop in, be entertained by students sharing projects, join in the conversations and creative activities or simply sit a spell and enjoy a good book in the Bergman Library Media Center! I’ll keep the light on for you!
