Construction Update - September, 2019

Preliminary Project Drawings - early learning centers and new elementary school

Currently the projects that design groups and district personnel have been working on are as follows: Blue Township Elementary, College Hill Early Learning Center, Eugene Field Early Learning Center, Keith Noll Maintenance Center, Anthony and Eisenhower Middle Schools and MHS West. 

Eugene Field and College Hill Early Learning Centers

BG Consultants/Alloy Architects and BHS/Hutton – Clint Hibbs, Bob Faires and Patrick Schutter

Early Childhood Team – Laura Thilges, Naomi Brandenburg, Tara Rosenow, Teri Bailey-Johnson, Elisabeth Nelson, Brandy Kirk, Andy Hutchinson and Lisa Heller

District Administration Representatives – Eric Reid, Matt Davis and Trisha Brooke-Fruendt

  • The design team continues to work on the construction documents for College Hill for when we can go out for bidding.
  • Design team continues to work on the selection and layout for the playground for College Hill.
  • The design team will go in front of the Building Zoning Appeals Board to ask for exemption for the parking spaces and for the building being over 1.68% on lot coverage.
  • The design committee continues to work on the design development drawings for Eugene Field.
  • BHS has taken over the College Hill site in preparation for the selective demo.
  • Construction fencing has been installed and demolition has begun to tear down the existing playground equipment.
  • Demo of the playground will be complete by 9-18-19.
  • According to the construction schedule the completion of the selective demo will be done by the end of September.

New Elementary School in Blue Township

  • The design team continues to work on construction documents.
  • There has been some cuts in the design from design development in order to get back in line with the original budget.
  • The integrity of the design has not been compromised by these cuts.
  • The design team continues to work the details of the spaces for casework, tack boards, white boards and projector locations.

The design team also continues to look at the site plan and ways to revise it for cost savings

Amanda Arnold Elementary School

  • This project is still at 90% complete.
  • The light pole fixtures shipped out the week of September 9, 2019.
  • Once the fixtures and poles have been received the sub-contractor will begin installation.
  • Look to have this project completed by the middle of October 2019.

Eisenhower and Anthony Middle Schools

  • The team met on September 4, 2019, to talk about details of some of the specialty classrooms.
  • The design team needed more clarification on detailing the art, band and orchestra rooms.
  • Vickie Kline was to get back to the design committee with the information on what the casework needs to be comprised of for the art room.
  • Locations for the projector and the screens have been located for both the band and orchestra room.

Manhattan High School

  • The design team and McCown Gordon presented to Facilities & Growth on September 11, 2019.
  • There was positive feedback.
  • The design team along with McCown Gordon will present the schematic design to the BOE on September 18, 2019.
  • The goal of presenting the schematic design is to gain approval or thumbs up to move on to design development.
  • If given the go ahead for design development, there will be more user groups to gain more information on what is needed in the new classrooms or what they might like to see in the collaborative spaces.

Keith Noll Maintenance Center

  • The planning department of the City present the architect/district’s application to the Urban Zoning Board. A few questions were asked of the district and a vote was taken. Good news is the board approved our application 5-0. Our application now goes to the City Commission for 1st read on October 1, 2019 and 2nd read on October 15, 2019.
  • The district will be taking bids for asbestos abatement and demolition of KNMC on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at 2:00 PM.The bids will then be in front of the board on October 2, 2019.
  • McCown Gordon continues to work on the budget and will begin to bid this project out with the restrictions that the City Planning department had set out on the project.
