Construction Update - August, 2019

Preliminary Project Drawings - early learning centers and new elementary school

Currently the projects that design groups and district personnel have been working on are as follows: Blue Township Elementary, College Hill Early Learning Center, Eugene Field Early Learning Center, Keith Noll Maintenance Center, Anthony and Eisenhower Middle Schools and MHS West. 

Eugene Field and College Hill Early Learning Centers

BG Consultants/Alloy Architects and BHS/Hutton – Clint Hibbs, Bob Faires and Patrick Schutter

Early Childhood Team – Laura Thilges, Naomi Brandenburg, Tara Rosenow, Teri Bailey-Johnson, Elisabeth Nelson, Brandy Kirk, Andy Hutchinson and Lisa Heller

District Administration Representatives – Eric Reid, Matt Davis and Trisha Brooke-Fruendt

  • Design team is currently working on the design development drawings for College Hill
  • There have been a few late design change requests made for College Hill and the design team has worked on those for the past two weeks.
  • BHS is working on a comprehensive budget for College Hill
  • The goal is to bid College Hill out by the end of September 2019
  • Design team will begin to work more intensely on Eugene Field once College Hill is complete with design
  • Next several meetings will focus on Eugene Field and their needs
  • Program wise they will be the same, however the floor plans are different
  • The two buildings layout out completely different
  • BG/Alloy would like to present to F&G on August 14, 2019 and then to the BOE on August 21, 2019 before they move into final construction documents

New Elementary School in Blue Township

  • The design team has really been working on the finer details of the building
  • The have been working on the massing of the interior of the building as well as the exterior
  • The design team is beginning to talk to user groups about what they need in the spaces
  • They have been showing the group 3D imaging of the spaces so that those can understand what spaces will look like.
  • This project will bid out late November

Amanda Arnold Elementary School

  • The project is 90% done
  • The parking lot and concrete flume have been poured over the weekend
  • The drainage on the south and west side of the property has been graded out
  • Thank you to the City and Body First for the cooperation for the additional funds and allowing the district to use the land to reshape the ground for proper drainage.
  • There are still a few items that need to be done before school starts
  • All safety items will be done by the time school starts
  • The cleaning and striping of the lot will happen the weekend after school starts
  • The new ADA accessible entry on the south side of the building is complete
  • High five to BHS for getting this done

Manhattan High School

  • We have had some really good user group meetings in the past few weeks: FACS, Band, Choir and Orchestra, SPED and Athletics
  • There will be more meetings with these user groups, but will be meetings with all the other user groups as well
  • The design team is trying to make sure that for the larger impacted groups we hear the needs and do the programs coming from east campus where do they need to be located geographically
  • They design team is focused on one option for the addition
  • As stated before the addition will be on the east end of the building
  • The new auxiliary gym and replacement of the wrestling room and storage will be on the west side of the building, coming off the north existing gym.
  • The new auxiliary gym will seat 500
  • Still exploring how to add seating the existing north gym
  • GEA is really making sure that all programs/classrooms are accounted for
  • GEA is also making sure that those that need offices also have the space

Keith Noll Maintenance Center

  • Jonathan Holley, GEA and myself meet with the city to go over the proposed plans for KNMC
  • We were given some shocking news that we needed to go through a Facility Review Process
  • We will be having a public hearing meeting on this Friday, August 9th at 6:00 PM at Strong in the conference room
  • We will then have to present in front of the Urban Planning Board just like Matt had to do for the parking lot for Woodrow Wilson
  • With fingers crossed we get approval and we then go to the City Commission
  • As all the above is going on, MCG has put out and early package for the metal building and the concrete pad
  • The plan is to present the cost to F&G on August 14, 2019 and then to the BOE on August 21, 2019
  • GEA is anticipating to have the completed documents done by the first of October
  • Myself and maintenance staff that will be displaced will move to job trailers that will be delivered the week of September 9, 2019

Eisenhower and Anthony Middle Schools

  • Changes were made to the nurses office and the kitchen
  • We received positive feedback from both groups that they liked the changes
  • The design group continues to work on the fine details of the spaces
  • They will begin to meet with some to the user groups to work out those details
  • MCG continues to update the budget as more items are detailed
